Common Feng Shui Mistakes in Singapore Homes (and How You Can Avoid Them)

When it comes to Feng Shui, even the smallest details in your home can make a big difference in how energy flows. In Singapore, where most of us live in HDB flats, condos, or compact apartments, it’s easy to overlook certain Feng Shui basics. The good news? Many of these mistakes are simple to fix once you’re aware of them. Let’s go through the most common Feng Shui mistakes homeowners in Singapore make — and what you can do instead.

1. Placing Your Bed Directly Under a Beam

If you’ve ever woken up feeling restless or tired despite sleeping for 7–8 hours, check if your bed is directly under a ceiling beam. Beams create a heavy, oppressive energy that can affect your health and well-being.

What you can do:

  • Shift your bed away from the beam if possible.

  • If moving is not an option (especially in smaller HDB or condo rooms), consider installing a false ceiling or canopy to “soften” the beam’s effect.

2. Ignoring the Main Door

Your main door is known as the “mouth of Qi” — the entry point where energy flows into your home. A cluttered or blocked entrance can prevent positive energy from entering.

Common mistakes you may be making:

  • Shoes scattered everywhere.

  • A door that cannot open fully.

  • A mirror directly facing the main door (which pushes energy right back out).

What you can do:

Keep your entrance clean, bright, and welcoming. Invest in a neat shoe cabinet, ensure your door opens fully, and place a plant or warm light nearby to invite good energy in.

3. Poor Kitchen Stove Placement

In many Singapore flats, the stove often ends up next to or opposite the sink. This creates a “fire and water clash,” symbolising conflict between family members.

What you can do:

If renovation isn’t possible, try simple remedies:

  • Place a wooden chopping board between the stove and sink.

  • Introduce neutral elements like earth-toned décor to harmonise the fire-water clash.

4. Mirrors in the Wrong Places

Mirrors can be powerful in Feng Shui, but wrong placement can do more harm than good.

Avoid placing mirrors:

  • Facing your bed (it can disturb your sleep and relationships).

  • Directly opposite the main door (bounces away incoming Qi).

  • Reflecting clutter (it doubles the negative energy).

What you can do:

Use mirrors to expand space in small apartments, but be intentional. Position them to reflect something positive, like natural light or a beautiful view.

5. Having Clutter Everywhere

We live in one of the world’s most space-constrained cities, so clutter is a common problem. But in Feng Shui, clutter blocks the flow of Qi, causing you to feel stuck, stressed, or unmotivated.

What you can do:

Start small. Clear out expired items in your fridge, old clothes in your wardrobe, or unused gadgets. A clean and organised home creates room for fresh energy (and opportunities) to flow.

6. Toilets Positioned Near the Centre of the Home

In many HDB layouts, the bathroom ends up near the centre of the flat. Unfortunately, this drains away good Qi from the heart of the home.

What you can do:

Keep the toilet door closed and the lid down. Add greenery or wood elements near the bathroom to “lift” the energy.

7. Neglecting Natural Light and Airflow

A dark, stuffy home doesn’t just feel gloomy — in Feng Shui, it means stagnant energy.

What you can do:

  • Open your windows daily to let in fresh air.

  • Use sheer curtains to allow natural sunlight.

  • Place plants in corners to revive stagnant energy.

8. Wrong Work Desk Position

With more of us working from home, desk placement matters. Sitting with your back to the door puts you in a “weakened” position, making you feel unsupported or easily caught off guard.

What you can do:

Whenever possible, position your desk so you can see the door while working. If that’s not possible, place a small mirror on your desk to reflect the entrance — this creates a sense of security and awareness.
