Donating coffin to the dead is considered one of the greatest merits in Theravada Buddhism.

Helping a kind devotee to pass his donation to a family living in poverty. I also added my share of contribution, to help them purchase a coffin and to hold a proper funeral for the decease family member. I was more than happy to do this.
Today I have helped a devotee to arrange for his donation to be passed directly to an underprivileged family in a rural area in Lampang, Thailand, to purchase a coffin for a 35 year-old man who has died in a tragic car accident.
The money will go into the purchase of a proper coffin, conducting a decent funeral and setting up a grave for the deceased. We would like to thank the kind and generous devotee for his great compassion in helping the less fortunate.

The monk has performed a ritual to honor both the donor and the deceased. This ritual aims to inform the deceased of the donor's generosity and to bestow blessings upon the donor for their kind act. The act of donating a coffin serves as a way to provide a dignified final resting place for the deceased and to prevent them from becoming homeless or distressed spirits, according to Taoist beliefs. In many parts of Asia, people who cannot afford proper burials for their loved ones turn to temples for help. Over time, the act of donating coffins to assist the less fortunate has become a norm and a means for Buddhists to accumulate merit and good karma, bringing them good luck and mitigating negative karma. For Buddhists, the pursuit of merit involves cultivating a wise sense of self, which can be achieved through giving, virtue, and meditation, among other things. Generosity, when practiced with the proper motivation, can lead to the highest level of happiness. As one pursues merit, they learn to let go of unwise ways of thinking and overcome stinginess, apathy, and hard-heartedness through the development of giving, virtue, and goodwill.
It is well-known to people in Hong Kong that the entertainment mogul and philanthropist Shaw Run Run, who was one of the most influential figures in the Asian entertainment industry, has also donated many coffins throughout his entire life. He lived to an old age of 106, and his success in both commercial and humanitarian causes is something that need no more elaboration.
In Chinese character, coffin is actually written as 棺材, which shares the same pronunciation as 官財 in the idiom 升官發財, which means to be promoted and prospered. The act of donating a coffin 棺材, carries a very auspicious meaning and implication for 官財 (promotion and prosperity) to return to you.

The amount of $4,000 (SGD) has been officially handed over to the Senior Monk and medical doctor in charge of providing financial assistance to underprivileged families with deceased family members at Phrae Emergency Hospital. This amount will be used for arranging funerals and purchasing coffins for the deceased. The Senior Monk has prayed for the donors of this meritorious event.
